“VIRASAT 2011” was hosted by Cultural Committee of I.T.S Engineering College in association with “SPIC MACAY” on 4th November 2011 at the college campus. The incredible musical event was presented by Padma Bhushan Awardee Smt. Teejan Bai. The event began with the bouquet presentation by the Director of the institute Dr. Sraban Mukherjee to the legend Smt. Teejan bai. The audience witnesses were the students, faculty members and The Heads of various Departments.
Pandavani literally means stories or songs of Pandavas the legendary brothers of Mahabharata, and involves the lead singer, enacting and singing with an ektara or a tambura (stringed musical instrument), decorated with small bells and peacock feathers in one hand and sometimes kartal (a pair of cymbals) on another
Teejan Bai is an exponent of Pandavani who continues to enthralled audiences, the world over with her unique folk singing and her powerful voice; and passing on her singing to the younger generation, Teejan Bai has lot of awards to her credit the prime ones being, the Padma Shri in 1988 and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1995.
As Teejan Bai's tale unfolded Bhishma, the perfect knight the chivalrous Karna, the noble Pandavas, the mightly Dushasana, Draupadi, and the legend among legends Krishna came alive on stage. Towards the end of the programme, groups of students went up to the artiste to express their admiration. Teejan Bai's only reaction was a simple smile. What charmed the young audience was the ease with which they could savour a show in the Chattisgarhi dialect. And though the story was not new, Teejan Bai's unique style of expressing it wove magic. And her sense of humour was unbeatable!!
The audience highly appreciated their performance and was keen to know more about this form of music. Finally the event ended with the gift presentation by Director Sir to Teejan Bai and the accompanying artists. The entire event was coordinated by Dr. Deeksha Dave
